Obituary of Olive Armstrong
JESSICA OLIVE ARMSTRONG (1910-2008)
After a life fully lived and peacefully in her sleep on Sunday July 20th, Olive Armstrong passed at the age of 98 at Middlechurch Home.
She was predeceased by her husband Carman (1998), her grandson Greg Chapiel (1990), daughter-in-law Pat (2004), and son Keith (2006). She leaves to cherish her memory daughter Barb (Ed) and sons Terry (Doreen), Tom (Mabel) and Lawrie. Grandma will also be fondly remembered by her 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. Olive will also be remembered by many nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States.
Olive was born February 9, 1910 in England to John and Edna Tipping. Her father immigrated to Winnipeg in 1912. In 1914, the family made the trip to join their father.
In 1928, she studied music at Regina College. She became an accomplished pianist and organ player. Olive's musical talents were shared for many years as a member of the St. Paul's Church choir (Middlechurch) and in the Winnipeg Senior's Choir.
She met Carman Armstrong in Saskatchewan and they were married in June 1930. Once her children were grown, she received her LPN from Misericordia Hospital, and studied languages at University of Winnipeg.
When Carman retired, the couple began to travel across North America and spent many winters on the Gulf of Mexico. After Carman passed, Olive continued to reside on her own. She was a very active member of the Wellness Centre and at age 96, was featured in a fitness article in the Winnipeg Free Press.
