Obituary of ELIZABETH "BETTY" MARIE HERDY

ELIZABETH "BETTY" MARlE HERDY [ NEE BLOM ] DECEMBER 4, 1915 - AUGUST 21, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Betty Herdy, age 97, on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at the Misericordia Health Centre, following a lengthy illness. Betty was predeceased by her husband John, siblings Audrey Sparrow and Harry Blom, brothers-in-law Bill Herdy, Frank Porznak, and her sister-in-law Anne Herdy. She is survived by her children Cheryl Walker [Robert] and William "Bill" Herdy [Debbie Irvine]; grandchildren, David Walker, William 'Bill' Walker [Bev], Susan Doell [Craig], Lena Mounicot [Marc], James Herdy and Kenneth Herdy; 5 great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Alex Walker, Emma and Ethan Doell and Matis Mounicot. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Olga Herdy, Elsie Porznak and Bea Blom; and many nieces and nephews. She will be truly missed by Cay Huckerby to whom she often referred to as her second daughter Betty was raised and resided in Elmwood, East, and North Kildonan areas. She was a very active and fun loving person. In her younger years she and dad bowled and square danced - she loved dancing. She then took up golfing and curling and had a wonderful time attending various rural bonspiels. Her favourite activity was swimming. As late as 92 years of age she was swimming 1/2 mile 3 times a week. She liked knitting and doing crafts and gave her projects to those near and dear to her. Mom loved and was loved by her family. She was always so happy when her whole family got together as a group no matter what the occasion, Her greatest joy, outside of her 'family, was being a member of Jephtha Chapter #22 Order of the Eastern Star. She rarely missed a meeting and held many offices within her chapter. She was presented with her 50 year pin in 2011. Unfortunately in the last 3 years progressive Alzheimers robbed her of her precious memories. The family would like to thank The Rosewood, particularly the staff and tenants of the Briarwood for their kindness and caring. We would also like to thank the Misericordia Interim Placement unit C5 for their efforts, care, and compassion in the final days of her life. There will be no formal funeral service. A family interment of her ashes will take place at a later date.
