IRMA ELFRIEDE BARTEN

(nee Krumbiegel)

March 4, 1929- February 26, 2024

Irma Elfriede Barten passed away with her daughters by her side. She was predeceased by her husband Hans in 2015, son Gordy in 2022, sister Marianne and her parents. She is lovingly remembered and missed by her daughters Monika (Art) and Sylvia (Darryl), grandchildren Daniel, Karrie, Jacob, Abigail (Anthony) and Rebecca, great grand-children Emily, Sierra, Makenna. She also leaves behind Ardice, Katelyn, Brittany, Ven.

Irma was born and raised in Nerchau, Germany. Her family was very close; they loved each other deeply and took care of each other. Times were tough during World War II. Mom was a teenager who learned to make do with what they had. Although food, electricity and heat were scarce, there was an abundance of love. Her family became very close as they sat by candlelight, singing songs, telling stories and praying for loved ones in battle. This strong bond gave Mom the determination and commitment to continue her education and become a nurse.

She met Dad in Hamburg and decided to marry him and start their new lives together as a family with Gordy and Monika. They moved to Canada and settled in Red Lake, ON. Sylvia was born in 1968. They lived there for many years and Mom decided to nurse in Canada. She recertified in English and worked at the Red Lake hospital for many years. Everyone knew she was compassionate, kind and loving. Mom was active in the church as well. When Mom and Dad moved to Winnipeg in 1985, she continued her volunteerism in the church and the Transcona community.

Mom loved nature! Many days and weekends were spent at the cottage in Wallace Lake. Walking in the bush, picking blueberries and endless hours of canoeing; these were some of her favourite activities. She loved to bake. Many people will remember her doughnuts rising outside on hot summer days, Apfelkuchen and Schwartzwalder Kirchtorte. She sewed, knitted and enjoyed crafts; especially those with glitter. Music was very important to Mom. She sang in church choirs for many years.

Mom will be sadly missed, but she is now in peace. She sends her love.
