She was the eldest daughter of seven children. Mom shared many stories of her life in Riverton. She was extremely proud of her Icelandic heritage and loved being the daughter of a fisherman and a cook on Lake Winnipeg. She let us know the hardships her family endured during those days. Mom also let us know the joys she shared by being with family and visiting with good neighbours. Her family moved to Selkirk when she was a teenager and this is where she met Teddy. Mom worked at the Selkirk Mental Health Center until she married Teddy in 1955 and then they moved to Winnipeg. Mom worked nights at the Children’s hospital part time until she needed to stay home fulltime to take care of her young son Claude until his death at 4 years of age in Rochester Minn. She re-entered the workforce in 1980 working with young children at Victoria Albert School until her retirement in 1998. The students were her reason for going to work every day. Amma devoted her life to her kids. They were her main focus even when they became adults. Mom was always sending you home with treats, cookies, leftovers and always some ”you better listen to me” advice. Her grandchildren brought her great joy and happiness. She loved to brag that she had 18 grandchildren. Mom had hiding spots for treats all over her house and when her grandkids came over, young and old, they went looking for the treasure. Mom also took treat orders from her grandkids so when they did come to visit, their requested treat was there waiting for them.
