Obituary of SAM MALEGUS

SAM MALEGUS August 21, 1922 – May 2, 2014 Peacefully on Friday, May 2nd, with his wife and friends by his side, Sam passed away at the age of 91 years. Sam was the beloved husband of Moira (Pennycook), married for 58 years. Sam was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Niketa, brothers Nick (Sophie), John (Lena), Mike (Eleanore), Peter and sister Josie Stanko (Late Bill). Sam is survived by his sister Olga (Stan) Chura, sister Kay Brunet (Late John) and by his sister-in-law Louise Malegus. Sam is also survived by his brothers-in-law, Rod (Eileen) Pennycook, Bruce (Fern) Pennycook, and numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren. Sam was born August 21st, 1922 in Melrose, Manitoba. He worked for the City of Winnipeg for 35 years and retired in 1984. Sam and Moira loved their yearly get away to Hawaii for the last 19 years. This last winter Sam was unable to go to Hawaii due to his health. Sam was a 5 pin bowler on Monday and Friday mornings at Polo Park and was a life member at Tuxedo Lawn Bowling Club. He enjoyed his garden and helping neighbours. Sam was thoughtful and kind and enjoyed having coffee with friends at Tim’s at Polo Park. Sam was the last surviving member of the “Malegus Boys”. He had numerous nieces and nephews from his side of the family and was always interested to hear what everyone was doing and was happy for all their accomplishments. He was a great help to his family, either driving them around or helping plant or harvest crops. The nieces and nephews always thought of “Uncle Sam” as a very gentle, caring man. Special thanks to the McDougall family, Patti, Ted and children. They are wonderful friends and great neighbours. Thank you to Jeannette for being there when we needed help and to all the family and friends. Funeral Service will take place at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, on Tuesday, May 13th at 10:00 a.m. with Rt. Rev. Msgr. Michael Buyachok officiating. Interment to follow, after lunch, at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Birds Hill Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sam’s memory to the Liver or Kidney Foundation. Vichnaya Pam’yat!
