HELENE ADELAIDE MAYER (nee Rieger) Peacefully on Feb, 18, 2009, at the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg, Helene Adelaide Mayer, at the age of 91, passed on into the waiting arms of her loving husband, Mickey. Helene was born in Winnipeg on April 16, 1917 to John and Mary Rieger and was the oldest of seven children. She attended St. Joseph's School as well as playing the organ for St. Joseph's Church in West Kildonan. It was while playing the organ in church that she met her future husband, Mickey, and they were married on September 22, 1934. Together, they raised two daughters and one son and in 1957, adopted a second son. Helene's interests and passions were varied. Besides her four children, she kept a neat, well groomed house, loved to knit, plant flowers in the flower beds around the house, bowling, playing cards, and was a charter member of the St. Alphonsus Imperial Bingo Club. She is survived by her brother Victor Rieger (Mary) and sister Theresa McNab, daughters Janice Leroux (Leon), Elaine Baxter (Jim) and sons Michael and Anthony, 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Mickey, brothers John, George, Joseph Rieger, and sister Adeline Herner. The Family would like to extend a special thanks to the nurses and staff of the Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg, niece Jodi Miner, and surrogate daughter Patti Adams for their kindness, love, and special care in the past few years. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 23, 2009 at 10:00 AM at St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, Munroe Ave. at Brazier St. with Monsignor L. McCloskey officiating. Prayers will be 7:00 PM, Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St with Father R. Beaudry officiating. Interment will follow in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Helene's name to the CNIB.
