As a young man, John was a competitive athlete and an active member of the YMCA, where he studied acrobatics. He was stationed in Bermuda during World War II. He was a proud member of the Manitoba Co-operative Association as one of his early jobs was as a People's Co-op Dairy driver. John married Esther in 1958 and began training as a Stationary Engineer. The family moved to Lynn Lake in 1968 where John worked at Fox mine and gained his First Class Power Engineer's ticket. The family returned to Winnipeg and John worked until his retirement at the Central Energy Plant at HSC. John remained physically and socially active into his 70s. He enjoyed golf, cross country skiing, social gatherings and dances. He was artistic - he drew, painted, carved and folded origami.
