It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Raul Lourenco on August 5, 2026, at the age of 85.  He passed peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital with his family by his side.

He was predeceased by his wife, Maria, and is survived by his son Lendor (Sheryl); daughter Sandy (Chad); and five cherished grandchildren, Cody, Owen, Austin, Blake and Emersyn. He also leaves behind his brother, sisters, and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Raul was born and raised in Santo Antonio, Sao Miguel, Açores (Azores), Portugal.  He immigrated to Canada in 1969 and married the love of his life, Maria, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, in 1973. They settled to Winnipeg, where they raised their family and made it their forever home.

Raul was a hardworking man who devoted himself to providing for his family through his years of employment at Swift Meat Packing Plant and Best Brand Meats.

He had many passions, including spending time with his grandchildren, making homemade wine in the garage, and contributing to the Portuguese Church and community. Many will remember Raul for his welcoming nature and the countless hours spent laughing, talking, and sharing stories from his front doorstep or favorite bench.

Most importantly, Raul was a devoted husband, an amazing father, and an incredible Vovô (grandfather). He shared a special bond with his daughter-in-law, and his smile always lit up when he saw her. His children and grandchildren were the greatest joy of his life, and the many memories they shared will be treasured forever.

We will especially miss asking, "How are you today, Dad (Vovô)?" and hearing his response every time: "50/50," followed by a big smile.

Raul often described himself to his grandchildren as being "strong like a bull." He demonstrated that strength time and again, especially a few years ago when doctors believed he would not survive a traumatic brain injury. True to his character, he continued to fight and persevered, giving us all more precious time together.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Middlechurch Home of Winnipeg for their compassionate care over the past few years, as well as the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their kindness and care during his final days.

Dad (Vovô), we will love you forever and take comfort in knowing that you and Mom are together again. It’s not good-bye, it’s see you later.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, August 14 at 12:00p.m., with visitation beginning at 11:00a.m. at Immaculate Conception Parish (181 Austin St N). Raul will be laid to rest at Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery. Guests are invited to join the family for a reception at Cropo Funeral Chapel (1442 Main Street).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Raul's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
