Sebastiano Lao passed away with his family by his side on Wednesday, June 17,2026, at Golden Door Geriactrics in Winnipeg, at the age of 96 years.

He was predeceased by his loving wife Graziella Cammarata; brothers, Francesco Lao, Girolamo Lao, Vincenzo Lao and sister, Antonietta Pagliuca; parents, Corrado and Salvatrice Lao; sister-in law, Maria Crupi; brothers-in law, Philip Crupi, Michele Cammarata.

He also leaves to mourn his family, daughter, Salvina Colavito (Harvey); son, Corrado Lao (Cindy) and daughter, Giuseppina Proskurnik; brother Nunzio Lao (Rosa); brother, Gaetano Lao (Vincenza); sister-in-law, Teresa Lao, sister-in-law Enza Maiorino (Liberato), sister-in-law, Santina Lao; grand children, great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  

Sebstiano was born in Calascibetta, Sicily, Italy, on January 22, 1930. He immigrated to Canada in 1955 and made Winnipeg his lifelong home. He married Graziella Cammarata of Villarosa, Sicily, by proxy, and she later joined him in Canada. Together, they built a loving family and shared 62 years of marriage.

Sebastiano had many passions and hobbies throughout his life. He enjoyed music, gardening, reading and word searches. He was skilled at building furniture, clocks, and even a paddleboat bicycle. Above all, he was proud of his family.

The family would especially like to thank the many family members who were constantly present and supportive throughout his final days. We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to the staff at Golden Door Geriatric Centre for their care, compassion, and support, especially Katarina, whom Sebastiano affectionately called his favorite.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Church, 510 River Avenue, on Saturday, June 27, 2026. Viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by Mass at 10:00 a.m., officiated by Father Sam. Crypt entombment will follow at Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, 3990 Portage Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
