MARIA MADALENA MADRUGO MARQUES Obituary
On June 1, 2026, Maria Madalena, beloved wife of Joāo, loving mother of Gerry (Shelly), Edgar (Clara), and Tania (Marco), and cherished grandmother of Adrianna, Elissa, Angelina, Julia, Daniella, and Mateo, passed away peacefully at the age of 76, surrounded by the love of her family.
She leaves behind her sisters Manuela (Francisco), Eulália (Fernando), Adelina (Leonel), Ana (Joaquim), and Ermelinda (Manuel), and her brother Manuel (Alzira), as well as many nieces and nephews in Canada and Portugal who will treasure her memory. She was predeceased by her parents, Domingos and Maria do Ó; her sister, Ermelinda; and her parents-in-law, António and Conceição.
Known affectionately as Madalena, she and Joāo arrived in Canada in 1974, leaving their rural home in Portugal in search of new opportunities and a brighter future for their family. Through hard work, perseverance, and sacrifice, they built a wonderful life together and helped create opportunities not only for their children, but also for many members of their extended family.
Family was always the centre of Madalena's world. She deeply loved her husband, children, and grandchildren, and treasured every moment spent with them. She was a devoted mother and grandmother whose love was unconditional and ever-present. Whenever someone needed her, she was there with an open heart, ready to offer support, comfort, and care.
Her love extended far beyond her immediate family. She cherished her siblings, nieces, and nephews and took great joy in bringing everyone together. Whether in Canada or Portugal, she proudly hosted Christmas celebrations and family gatherings filled with laughter, warmth, and generosity. Her home was always welcoming, and nothing made her happier than having it filled with family and friends.
Many happy summers were spent at the Portuguese Park, surrounded by loved ones. Some of her fondest moments were spent gathered around a fire with her siblings, sharing stories and memories of their childhood in Portugal. These treasured conversations kept her deeply connected to her roots and brought her immense joy.
In her later years, Madalena enjoyed the rewards of a life dedicated to family. She treasured spending more time with her sisters and extended family in Portugal and especially loved the family's apartment in the Algarve. Days at the beach, feeling the warmth of the sun and listening to the rhythm of the ocean, were among her greatest pleasures.
She also possessed a wonderful sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. She delighted in travelling and experiencing new places and cultures. Memorable journeys took her throughout Portugal, Cuba, Mexico, Greece, and Italy, creating countless cherished memories. The photographs she leaves behind capture the happiness and wonder she found in these experiences.
Above all, Madalena's legacy is one of courage, sacrifice, generosity, and unwavering love for her family. She remained deeply connected to her roots, gave selflessly to those she loved, and lived a life rich with purpose and devotion. Her memory will forever be carried in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Riverview Health Centre for the care, comfort, and dignity they provided to Madalena. They would also like to thank CancerCare Manitoba for their support throughout her two-year journey with cancer.
Descanse em paz.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, June 12, at 12:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 181 Austin Street North, with condolences and viewing one hour prior.
