Mrs. Uhryn was such an important part of my teenage years and early adulthood that I could write pages and pages of happy memories about her. She truly was like a second mother to me when I was growing up, and being welcomed into the Uhryn family was one of the great gifts of my life.
Some of my fondest memories are of coming to their house after school with Linda. On the very best days, it was pierogi day. Mrs. Uhryn would have a huge pot of homemade pierogis boiling on the stove. Her dough was always so light and beautiful, and we would sit around the kitchen table with Mr. Uhryn, Linda, and sometimes Ken, covering our pierogis with fried onions, melted butter, and sour cream. I can still picture that kitchen and remember how warm and comforting it felt. The same was true on cabbage soup days, when the whole house smelled wonderful and everything seemed to come from her garden and from her hard work and care.
I also treasure the memories of Christmas Eve. Their house was always full of family, friends, laughter, and food. And Mrs. Uhryn's deep freeze was legendary - full of homemade baking, cookies, bars, pierogies, holopchi, and perishke. Years later, she kindly shared her perishke recipe with me, and I still think of her every time I make them. I also remember the traditional Christmas Eve dishes she prepared, including kutia and fish, and how magical and welcoming those evenings always felt.
One memory that has always stayed with me happened when I was living and working in Montreal. A close friend was flying out to visit me for Thanksgiving, and Mrs. Uhryn sent along a paper bag filled with homemade holopchi and pierogies for me. It was such a simple but deeply loving gesture, and it meant the world to me. That was who she was, thoughtful, generous, nurturing, and always taking care of people.
Mrs. Uhryn was truly one of those irreplaceable people. She was strong, hardworking, deeply devoted to her family, and full of quiet faith and goodness. Even through heartbreak and loss, she kept going with grace and resilience. I was also fortunate to be welcomed into the church community that meant so much to the family, and those experiences left a lasting impression on me. Her faith was never something showy, it was expressed through kindness, hospitality, loyalty, hard work, and love.
The Uhryn home was one of the warmest and happiest places of my youth, and Mrs. Uhryn helped create that feeling for everyone lucky enough to walk through her door. I will always remember her with deep love, gratitude, and admiration.

To Linda and Baba's beloved granddaughters: What a legacy Jean leaves behind. Her unfailing support enabled Linda's Nursing Degree and a Masters. She inspired, along with their parents, granddaughter's Alexandria (B. A., B. Ed), Jacquelyn (B. Com) and Taylor (B. Eng). She ensured they knew their faith by encouraging their Confirmation. She never missed a danse recital no matter what the weather or the distance by bus. No Townsend Family Feast was without Baba's peerless perogies and pickles made from her garden bounty. A child of the depression, she never wasted a plastic bread bag, newspaper for wrapping or a good sturdy box for transporting her creations to the Townsend Home or Cottage. When her house was sold, it came with a freezer packed to the top with provisions for a small army.
What a joy to have shared the past 24 years with this incredible woman in our lives. We are so much richer for it. Louise and Jim

So sorry to lose our collective “Baba”. She was always available to offer appreciated (and sometimes much needed) advice & support. My girls, (Jessi & Madi) thought of her as their 2nd Baba.
She was always there for a good laugh which made her great company.
So sorry for your loss. Know she was loved and will be very missed.
