Doreen Helen Hodel (nee Keohane)

On April 30, 2026, mom passed away peacefully at the Riverview Health Centre.

Mom was born in St. Thomas, Ontario to Phil and Mary Keohane. When she was young, the family moved to Winnipeg and resided in a small home on Beverley Street where later her sister, Beverly was born. 

Growing up, mom attended Greenway School and General Wolfe Highschool. Outside of school, she enjoyed playing the accordion where she played at many dances and other venues. 

After high school, she worked in the Eaton’s department store downtown in various departments. She started with the mail order/catalogue area then route marking and eventually moved into the office. She was very proud of her 13 years there.

In 1971, she left Eaton’s when she met and married Ron Hodel as raising a family was something she always wanted. Melanie was born in 1972 and Marcy in 1974.

When living in St. James, Ron (dad) owned his own paving company, and mom would handle all the administrative tasks - company’s books and the phones. They also sold Amway together.

After leaving the paving business, we moved to Pinawa, Manitoba. Mom was always helping us girls with school, brownie and girl guide activities and badges, being a part of community. Mom also had our brother Bruce there, but he didn’t survive due to a heart defect.

In 1984, we moved back to Winnipeg.  Mom loved cooking and baking (especially cabbage rolls and borsht), being in the large garden, having friends over for evening “lunches” and having coffee with her friends at the Garden City mall.  Through all the moves, mom made lifelong friends.

In 1991, dad passed away suddenly. We sold the house and moved into an apartment still in the Maples/Garden City area. After over 30 years of apartment life, and her health was declining, mom moved into Riverview Health Centre. She loved talking to the staff, other residents and having visitors.

Now she is at peace. We love and miss you mama. You will forever be in our hearts.

A funeral service and reception will be held on Saturday, May 23 at 1:00pm at the Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street in Winnipeg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Respiratory Chronic Care Unit at Riverview Health Centre, One Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0Z1.
