JOHANNES (JOHN, HANS) KESSLING Obituary
Johannes Kessling (John, Hans)
May 26, 1935 – April 26, 2026
Johannes Kessling passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with dementia. He was 90 years old.
Born on May 26, 1935, in Papenburg, Germany, John (Hans) lived a life defined by curiosity, resilience and adaptability. These traits served him well as a child during the war and throughout his life's journey. As a young man, he followed in his father’s footsteps and trained as a baker, a craft he continued after emigrating by ship to Canada with his beloved wife, Hildegard, and their toddler daughter, Christin. In their new home, John and Hilda built a life rooted in hard work and community. They formed deep bonds with fellow German immigrants who quickly became like family and grew their own family with the birth of their son, Jens, and later their daughter, Tanya. As parents they were proud to watch their family expand as their children married and were later blessed to become grandparents and later still, great-grandparents.
John’s adventurous spirit was evident early on. He spent several years working as a cook aboard a merchant ship, traveling the world and satisfying a lifelong wanderlust that would remain with him always. Later in life, he and Hilda continued exploring together, creating cherished memories across many countries. Always ready with a camera in hand, he chronicled their travels and life's moments in photos, on maps and in journals. He was known as a true story teller.
He was a man of many talents and interests. In his youth, John was a self-taught musician who played in a band in Germany. Music remained close to his heart, and he later shared his gift as a musician for the Blessed Sacrament choir. He gave generously of his time, volunteering for over 20 years at Park Manor Personal Care Home, Concordia Hospital and Bethania Care Home playing the piano or accordion as the entertainment. He donated blood regularly for more than two decades. Giving back to others was simply part of who he was.
Professionally, John worked as a bus driver for Winnipeg Transit, a role that suited his friendly, outgoing nature. He was known for striking up conversations with anyone he met, calling out stops over the microphone and often sharing photos of his family and stories from his life. He had a wonderful sense of humor, would wear costumes while performing music to bring smiles to faces, and an infectious positivity that brightened the days of those around him.
John embraced life fully and was never one to sit still. He prided himself on staying active, running half marathons, jogging and then later in life cycling throughout Transcona. Along the way, he became a familiar and friendly presence, often stopping to chat with friends and neighbours. Even in retirement, John continued to challenge himself by learning to use technology. Using his computer, laptop and iPhone John shared pictures, jokes and emails daily, keeping in touch with his network.
Many good times and fond memories were made camping in the early years and later at the family cottage in Island Beach. John enjoyed the German gatherings with coffee and cake and playing cards.
In his later years, John returned to Park Manor, where he was cared for with compassion and dignity. The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to all the kind and caring staff who touched his life and they request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Park Manor Care.
John leaves behind his loving wife of 60 years, Hildegard; his children Chris (Joe), Jens (Kristin), and Tanya (Jason); his grandchildren Markus (Maddi), Malora (Erik), Cairo, Rio, and Tasman; and his great-grandchildren Elly and Kane. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
John’s life was one of kindness, generosity, and connection. He touched countless lives with his warm spirit and open heart. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the book he wrote, the many traditions he helped create, and the many people who were fortunate to know him.
The Memorial Service will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1800 Day St., Winnipeg.
