It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Elder, Stella Isabel Keller, who passed away at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 77, surrounded by her loving family.
Stella was predeceased by her devoted husband, Jorg Keller; her parents Alfred James Cook Sr. and Isabella Cook; her brothers Vernon, Harry and James Cook; her sisters Violet, Virginia, Verna Williams and Merna Guiboche and her grandson Ambrose Kennedy.
She leaves to cherish her memory her niece and surrogate daughter Diana Mercer (Doug); Brian Beacham (Sherri); Matthew (Chrisielle); Jorg Jr. (partner); her grandson Aiden Keller and her sister Dorothy Goosehead, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Stella was born and raised in Bloodvein River. She began her working life as a waitress in Kenora, Ontario before returning home, where she became a substitute teacher in her community. Driven by her passion for education, she pursued and obtained her Bachelor of Education in Brandon, Manitoba.
Stella dedicated many years to education, working with Bloodvein First Nation and Frontier School Division. She played an instrumental role in establishing the school in Long Body Creek. She later served as Principal of Miskooseepi School and went on to become Director of Education. Her commitment to her community extended into leadership, where she served as Education Portfolio Councillor for Bloodvein First Nation.
A respected leader, mentor and advocate, Stella’s wisdom, strength and unwavering dedication to public service inspired generations. She encouraged others to lead with integrity, speak with courage, and stand firmly for what is just and right.
Stella met her husband while in Brandon, and they were married in her home community of Bloodvein River. Throughout her life, she remained deeply engaged in community affairs and was often sought out for her guidance. She was also a proud entrepreneur, owning and operating Keller and Sons, a community general store.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Chief and Council, Pastor Jim Anderson and his wife, Kim Scott for her ongoing support, and Diana Mercer for her unwavering dedication and care. Special appreciation is also extended to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their professionalism and compassion.
Wake services will be held on Sunday, April 19 and Monday, April 20 from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street.
Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 21 at 10:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Home, 1442 Main Street. Pallbearers: Brian Beacham, Mark Guiboche, Bennard Goosehead, Jarrel Cook, Mervin Cook, Dion Cook Honorary Pallbearers: Charles Rieck, Craig Cook, Harry Cook, and all her nieces and nephews, with love and respect.
Honorary family members: Eileen Monkman, Caroline Travers, Late Lorraine Cook, Roberta Goosehead, Patsy Keddie, Melvina Boulanger, Lloyd Williams, Catherine McKay, Shirley Fisher, with special mention for all the love and support and for those that loved her during difficult time, Irene Rupp, Denise Cook, Chanelle Tremblay, and Corey Bighorn.
The Cook and Keller family would like to thank all who have offered their condolences and support during this difficult time.
