WILLIAM DOUGLAS “DOUG” CAREY

William Douglas “Doug” Carey, passed away on February 22, 2026 at the age of 94 after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family.

The only child of Doris Carey (nee Kirkham) and Dick Carey, he was born on July 28, 1931 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Doug grew up in West Kildonan in an unusual, but loving family setting that developed his strong work ethic and a deep love of family.

Doug was predeceased by his father Dick, his mother Doris, his special Aunt Evie and his loving wife of 50 years, Maisie Carey (nee Godfrey).  He was a devoted husband, father and Gumpie, always there to offer guidance, love and a good laugh.

Doug had many passions in his life, including playing cards with his family and his dogs.  He spent many years as an active member of the Manitoba Gun Dog Association; he remained an involved participant up until his late 80s.  He was never happier than when he was out training his dogs, or spending time with his family.  Doug was known for his amazing sense of humour and could have everyone laughing over his many stories and jokes. Doug had been retired from the Winnipeg School Board for over 32 years – he often said, “boy, that pension plan was sure a good investment!”

He is survived by his loving daughters Debbie (Tony), Susan (Lee) and Julie (Kon) and his grandchildren; Sarah (Dave and their foster son Colten), Josh (Meghan), Jamie (Rose), Katie (Nick and great-grandson, Theodore), Danny (Brooklyn), Greg (Maggie), as well as his very good friend Dick, along with many nieces, nephews and special neighbours.

A funeral service to celebrate Doug’s life will be held on Monday, March 2nd, 2026 at 1 p.m., at St. Paul’s (Middlechurch) Anglican Church, 299 Balderstone Rd., West St. Paul.  Family and friends are invited to attend and pay their respects.  Interment with a luncheon will follow the service.  In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to either Jocelyn House, The Winnipeg Humane Society or the Lung Association.

Rest in peace, Dad.  We will never forget you and your memory will live on in our hearts forever.
