ANNA SUKICH Obituary

It is with profound sadness that our family announces the passing of Anna Sukich on Thursday February 12, 2026 at the age of 99.

Anna was predeceased by her husband Stefan Sukich in 2004. She leaves to mourn her four children Mary (Matt), Joseph, Stephen (Caroll), Hilda (Marty), her 13 grandchildren Matthew (Barbara), Michelle (Mark), Warren (Lindsay) Amanda (David), Kelsey (Michael), Jackie (Blair), Randy (Krystal), Daryl (Joelynn), Alyssa (Ryan), Myranda, Syrena, Joshua (Chantal), Rybecca (Daniel) and her 15 great grandchildren Madison, Mikayla, Colton, Brett, Logan, Easton, Kiptyn, Abby, Landin, Kohl, Addy, Ava, Meredith, Scarlett, Adaline, along with family in Vancouver and Slovenia.

She was predeceased by her parents Vendel and Terezija Bedek and brothers Stefan and Joseph.

Anna was born in the village of Martinje, Slovenia and married Stefan on November 3, 1946 and were together until his passing on November 3, 2004. In 1957 our mom and dad escaped the former Yugoslavia (Slovenia) along with their children Mary and Joseph with little more than the clothes on their backs. They immigrated to Canada in January 1958 and arrived at Pier 21 in Halifax. From there they boarded a train for Winnipeg. Here they took on whatever work they could find to establish a new life with their two children and subsequent births of Stephen and Hilda. In 1962 mom settled in to working as a dietary aide at St Jospeh’s Residence where she worked for 26 years until her retirement.

Anna had the sweetest smile and kindest heart that immediately drew people to her.

Although she didn’t have a middle name “giving” would have been the most appropriate one for her. As soon as you stepped into her house she was in the fridge looking for food and drink to serve you. Telling her no was not an acceptable response. Family was everything to her and she was everything to her family. Her greatest joy was spending time with family. Her secondary joy was her garden in summer which she worked on well into her late nineties. Her strong work ethic and determination allowed her to live alone in her own home until age 98, when a broken hip and failing health landed her in hospital for over 5 months.

Mom was a devout Catholic, and her faith helped her endure the difficult periods in her life. She was an active member of the Catholic Women’s league for many years.

Mom instilled her best attributes onto her children and ensured they could speak the Prekmurski dialect, thereby maintaining a vital connection to her beloved roots.

The family would like to express our sincere thanks to:

Dr TseLi Luk for his 32 years of care

Home Care staff for their assistance in allowing mom to remain in her home for as long as she did

Staff at River East Personal Care Home for the excellent care they provided mom

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 21, 2026 at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, 95 McDonald Avenue with Father Diosdado Parrenas as celebrant.

Viewing will commence at 1:00 pm with mass to follow at 2:00 pm.

Following the mass a reception will be held in the church hall with

Family interment to follow at Green Acres Memorial Gardens on Monday

Pallbearers will be Matthew Sobocan, Mark Tetzlaff, Warren Sukich, Joshua Terry, Randy Irvine and Daryl Irvine.

If friends so desire, donations may be made in Anna’s memory to Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.
