DORIS KAWULIA Obituary

Doris Kawulia left this world on January 27, 2026 after 93 years of love for her family and friends.

She was a beloved mother, Baba, aunt and friend known for her kindness, compassion, self-determination, feistiness and fabulous memory. She held her family close especially her granddaughter Meaghan and her daughter Tracey (Andrew) Fallak.

She was predeceased by her husband, Butch and son Mark Kawulia. Her parents Margaret and Ernie Lichtenstien her in-laws Helen and William Kawulia.  She spoke fondly of others who have passed including of her siblings Diedre (Gordon) Strain, Valerie (Jack) McClelland) and Bill (Helen) Lichtenstein, as well as Butch’s siblings Willian (Toolie)), Peter (Helen) and Mary Kaye Kawulia, and her nephew John Novak, and nieces Willa Novak, Cindy and Sandra Kawulia, and cousins Jeannie Sutton, and Mary Kiene Coughlin. Doris, Jeannie, and Mary were known as the three Old Crows of Winnipeg who shared times at the lake, and in their homes. She is survived by her granddaughter Meaghan, her daughter Tracey (Andrew) Fallak as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins who called her auntie.

Doris was born at St. Boniface Hospital and shortly after she moved to Lavallee, Ontario where her mother was a teacher. She made friends with people in Lavallee with whom she remained friends until her passing. Butch and Doris were married on April 17, 1954, and they lived in Fort Frances where their family home was filled with laughter, fish fries and great feasts. Her love for people was always present, and everyone was welcome. They then moved to Winnipeg in 1985 and her relationships with neighbours and relatives continued to grow. Their home was filled with holiday celebrations with extended family and friends until recent years as she became legally blind.  She loved to visit and to share stories. Her favorite activities were gardening, making perogies, baking, going for walks, playing with the dogs, watching and listening to Women’s Network, and visiting with others. Her routine on Saturday was to have her hair done, go for lunch and to go grocery shopping.   People describe her as someone who listened with true interest in their lives and was always willing to share her recipes which were delicious.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial Service will be held later this spring and will be announced on Cropo Funeral home site in May. We are hoping this will be a time to share stories filled with love and laughter.

If friends and family so desire in memoriam donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

She will be deeply missed and will live in our hearts forever.
