Prudencio Benavidez

October 27, 1939 – January 20, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Prudencio Benavidez on January 20, 2026 at the age of 86 years after struggling with complications following surgery in Winnipeg, MB.

Prudencio is survived by his loving and devoted wife Cora, his son Palmer (Sandra), daughter Noemi (Thanh), brother Florentino (Suzeth), sister Elisa (Marcelino) and grandchildren Joy and Nicholas. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews all over the world.

He was preceded to heaven by his parents, Lorenza and Tomas, his first beloved wife Fortunata, brother Tomas Jr., and sister Teresita.

Pru was born in the barangay of Rancho in Santa, Ilocos Sur, Philippines on October 27, 1939. He attended school until the age of 16 where he then worked as a fisherman, eventually moving to Manila finding work as a machinist where through a mutual friend, met and married Fortunata (Naty) Aquino then emigrated to Winnipeg, MB Canada in 1971. Pru and Naty went on to have two children, Palmer and Noemi. He worked odd jobs until he started working at Old Dutch Foods where he worked for 35 years before retiring in 2004.

Pru loved fishing and knew when to go and what conditions specific fish preferred in order to reel a big one in. He also loved camping whether in a tent or in his trusty, custom interior-designed Chevy van on a long-haul vacation drive.

After retiring, Pru and Naty did quite a bit of travelling on cruises and saw and experienced many different countries. After Naty passed in 2014 and Pru had married Cora in 2016, he lived simply in the home he built and enjoyed the bounty in the garden Cora created and they loved.

Though Pru may not have liked being the center of attention, he deserves to have his long years of fatherly and grandfatherly love honoured. He was reliable and loyal, more social than people realized and loved to both hear and tell a good story. He made friends easily with his easy-going personality. He had a lovely singing voice and could whistle incredibly well. He fiercely loved his grandchildren and cherished spending time with them.

Pru worked hard at every job he had and instilled that sense of worth, pride and work ethic in both his children. His legacy will be the love that will live on in his family.
