Derek William Wasylko

September 4, 1972– January 23, 2026

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Derek Wasylko at the age of 53 following his courageous two-year battle with cancer.

Derek leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories with his wife Cheryl, and his son Kevin. He is also lovingly remembered by his brothers, Dan, and Darren, mother-in-law Helen Short, sister-in-law Michelle (George) brother-in-law Earl (Julie), along with nieces Vanessa (Brad), Jessica (Devon), Megan, Emily, Miranda; nephew Earl, two great-nieces Lily and Chloe as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He will also be missed by his two cats, Keno and Karma.

Derek was predeceased by his parents Edward and Geraldine, his brother Dale, his sister-in-law Shawna, his dog Abby and two cats, Nala and Simba.

Derek loved to travel and looked forward to our fun in the sun winter vacations in the Caribbean or Mexico.  We would no sooner get back and he would start planning next year’s adventures.  

For 29 years, right up the day of his first treatment Derek was a dedicated and well‑respected employee at Cummins Sales and Service. His kind heart, gentle spirit, earned him many friendships throughout his career.

Always dependable and willing to help, Derek was someone friends, neighbours, and family could count on without hesitation.  He will be missed by so many.

We extend our special thanks to our palliative nurse, Angela, who came to our home every week to bring care and comfort to Derek so he could stay at home with the family he loved for as long as possible. We send our appreciation to the staff of the St Boniface Hospital palliative care unit, as well as the staff of GH4 at the Health Sciences Centre for your compassionate care.

According to Derek’s wishes, cremation has taken place.  A Celebration of Life will be held in late spring or early summer.

There are no goodbyes for us. Wherever you are, you will always be in our hearts.
