PAUL CONSTANTIN WERBOWSKI

On Saturday, January 17, 2026 at the Grace Hospital, Paul Constantin Werbowski, beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 93 years.

Paul was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Wanda. He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Paula Macek (Ralf) and his son Andrew (Michelle) of Oakville, Ontario. Paul is also survived by his grandchildren Bryce (Brittany), Brynn (Brendon), Brooks (Lauren) of Kennewick, Washington and Bret Macek and Lara (Paul) of Toronto, Ontario and Drew Werbowski of Ottawa, Ontario.

Paul is also survived by great-grandchildren Reese, Quinn, Dallas and Ava Macek of Kennewick, Washington.

Paul was born in Winnipeg and attended Isaac Newton high school where he excelled in numerous sports including baseball and hockey, graduating in 1949.

Paul played Legion baseball with the C. U. A. C. and was a city All-Star pitcher. He continued his love for sports by coaching neighbourhood soccer and hockey for the Robertson Roadrunners in the city’s North End, guiding his teams to successful seasons, occasional championships and teaching them valuable lessons about integrity and fair play.

Paul worked numerous jobs after graduating from high school before settling into the smoked meat industry. Initially a peddler for Manitoba Sausage, Paul’s entrepreneurial spirit, and business acumen led to the creation of Winnipeg Old Country Sausage which he owned together with his business partner of many years, Louis Werner. One of Paul’s proudest achievements was securing the contract to supply wieners to the Winnipeg Arena, where he watched his beloved Jets from their inception in the W.H.A.

Paul remained an avid supporter of all Winnipeg sports teams, including the Winnipeg, Goldeyes and Whips, the Blue Bombers, but most of all the Winnipeg Jets. He was thrilled with the team’s return to the city and rarely missed a game.

Paul’s love of sports and hockey, in particular, extended to his grandchildren, all of whom share his passion for the game. “Gramps” was a fixture at many rinks around the city, quietly but proudly cheering on his grandchildren and travelled to numerous out of town tournaments to provide support.

Paul was honest to a fault and a “straight shooter”. He valued integrity and honesty in others, traits which have been passed down to his progeny. His simple advice still resonates: “Respect everyone else. The rest will take care of itself.”

He would have been the first to acknowledge that he “had a good run” and encourage his family to remember good times fondly. Paul will be reunited with his beloved wife of 62 years, Wanda, who passed away in February, 2017. It was a challenging nine years for Paul to be without his devoted life partner.

During that time, Paul was cared for on a regular basis by his daughter, Paula and his son-in-law, Dr. Ralf Macek provided constant attention and compassionate care. His immediate family provided love and support through frequent phone calls and visits.

A private celebration of life will be held in the spring. If friends so desire, donations in Paul’s memory may be made to the Manitoba Alzheimer’s Society, a charity which Paul continued to support in honour of Wanda.
