John Bosco Curran passed away peacefully on November 9th, 2025, at the age of 87 years. He was predeceased by his parents, James Curran and Mary Ellen (nee McKeown) Curran, his siblings Eilish O’Hare, Mary Corrigan, Joan Gorman, Cecily Keogh, Valerie Curran, Michael Curran, and his daughter Veronica Curran.
John is lovingly remembered by his wife, Judith (nee Doyle), children, Ashling Curran, Mark Curran (Julianne), Garrett Curran (Alison), Anne Allen (Chris), and grandchildren Elizabeth, James, Caroline, Thomas, Matthew, Andrew, John, Aurora, and Fionn. He also leaves his brother Dermot Curran, and numerous nieces and nephews.
John was born in Newry, Northern Ireland on September 4,1938. He was the youngest of eight children, raised in Warrenpoint and doted on by his older siblings. He attended Clongowes Wood College, a Catholic boarding school near Dublin, Ireland from the age of 12 and graduated in 1956. John had very fond memories of his time at Clongowes, making lifelong friends and participating in school sports like cricket and rugby.
Education was very important to John as reflected by his academic accomplishments and post-graduate training. He attended University College Dublin and graduated from dentistry in 1962. After his first job working as a dentist in Northern Ireland, he moved to Lancashire, England to become the co-owner of a practice with a friend. It was through connections to his business partner that he met his wife Judith (Judy). He decided to give up the practice and begin his training as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon at Withington Community Hospital in Manchester, UK.
John and Judy were married in London, UK on January 22, 1971 and immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba the very next day. John completed his oral surgery training at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg and did additional training in Minneapolis, Minnesota when Mark and Ashling were young. John maintained a private practice as an oral surgeon, while working as a faculty member in the College of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba for decades. He found great fulfillment in teaching courses in dentistry and was deeply involved in the oral surgery graduate program, where he mentored and trained countless residents.
While living in Winnipeg, he built many connections and friends in the local dental and Irish communities. John and Judy took great joy in opening their home—regularly hosting dinners and gatherings for family, friends, and colleagues, and generously welcoming many individuals who stayed with them for extended periods. Among them were Reagan from Cross Lake, Manitoba, and Tomas from Stockholm, Sweden—both of whom John held in special affection and welcomed into the family while they attended high school in Winnipeg.
John traveled widely throughout his life, visiting every continent more than once and cherishing the many trips he took with Judy, his family, and through his professional work. In his later years, he always looked forward to the annual vacation to Cancun with Judy and Ashling, a tradition they enjoyed for more than three decades. He had a deep love of reading, history, classical music, and sports—especially golf and rugby. John had a remarkable breadth of knowledge and could speak with insight and detail on nearly any subject.
John was a devoted family man who would have done anything for his wife, Judy and their 5 children. He was very supportive of Judy and her career in medicine and was actively involved in his children’s activities while they were growing up. His family in Ireland was extremely important to him, and regular trips back home to Northern Ireland to visit his siblings and many nieces and nephews were always a highlight for John.
Despite a demanding career, John was a dedicated husband and father who was always available to help around the house and support the family. He found joy in simple routines like preparing family meals, ferrying children to countless activities, weekend errands and shopping trips. His Catholic faith was central to his life, along with his dedication to charitable organizations such as Special Olympics, where he served a term as President, and Network South, where he was a member of the Board of Directors.
A funeral mass will take place on Monday, November 24th, 2025 at 12:30 pm at St. Ignatius Parish. If friends so desire, donations may be made to Camps with Meaning or Salvation Army Winnipeg Community Ventures, in memory of John.
