Georgina Challis (Nee Thurlbeck)
May 20, 1925 - November 5, 2025
Georgina completed her 100-year life journey. She was surrounded by love as she peacefully passed away at Meadowood Manor.
Georgina will be lovingly remembered by her son Roger (Julie), daughter Maureen Bateman (Jamie), granddaughters Taylor Panchenko (Slava), Carling Bateman, and great granddaughter Isabelle Panchenko.
Georgina was a long-time member of the Windsor Park United Church. In the face of heartbreaking losses, her faith provided an enduring source of strength and comfort. This was especially true following the loss of her cherished husband David (1990) and her dear son Brian (2010).
Georgina was born in Hanna Alberta, to Harrison and Rosetta Thurlbeck. In 1933 during the great depression the family moved to Chilliwack B.C. where they lived on a small farm, growing what they needed to survive. In 1937, the family made a permanent move to Winnipeg. Georgina maintained life long friendships in Chiliwack, returning there many summers by train in her youth.
Georgina met her future husband David in 1951. David had come to Winnipeg with the British Royal Air Force for training. They were married in 1954. In 1960 Georgina and David started their own family with the arrival of their son Brian.
Georgina was very family oriented and was an amazing homemaker. Meals including fresh baked goods were prepared daily. Picnics to Assiniboine Park, day trips to Grand Beach, and family road trips in Canada and the U.S. were always special. She was always a big supporter of her children’s many activities.
Georgina was a proud grandmother with the arrival of Taylor and a few years later Carling. Georgina enthusiastically took on the role of care giver while their parents worked. The girls have sweet memories of their time spent with grandma doing all their favourite activities: games, reading, crafts, tea parties, baking and sleepovers.
Georgina loved to play games. Sunday dinners followed by games were not to be missed. In her later years while living at Seine River Retirement Residence Georgina could often be found in the middle of a cribbage game with family members.
Georgina loved her family. Everything she did was for their happiness and well being. Her legacy of love, faith and perseverance will live on in all who knew her.
We would like to thank the entire staff at Seine River Retirement Residence and notably Chantelle, Angela, and Lisa for the wonderful support and compassion they showed Mom during her 15 years as a resident. We would also like to express our gratitude and appreciation to the staff at Meadowood Manor for the exemplary care they provided Mom in the final year of her life. You are all truly special people.
Cremation has taken place and a private family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Georgina’s memory to The Winnipeg Humane Society.
May the voices of angels sing thee to thy rest.
