JULIA AMELIA VIANA DE BARROS PEREIRA Obituary

JÚLIA AMÉLIA VIANA DE BARROS PEREIRA

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and mother-in-law, Júlia Amélia Viana De Barros Pereira, who passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 26, 2025, at the age of 84.

Julia was predeceased by her loving and devoted husband of 46 years, Mário Joaquim Pereira, who passed on March 14, 2008.

She will be deeply missed by her cherished children Helena Matias and Mario Pereira (Sheila Pereira); her grandchildren Kayla Matias (Lucas Rosa), Christopher Pereira (Danielle Stepnuk), Alexandra Pereira (Darian Picklyk), Bryan Matias (Vanessa Rego), and Nicholas Pereira (Karina Tehlar); and her precious great-grandson Noah. She also leaves behind many extended family members and friends across Winnipeg, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, and Portugal.

Júlia was born on November 28, 1940, in Campos, V.N. de Cerveira, Minho, Portugal. Affectionately known as Júlinha, she was raised in a hardworking, entrepreneurial family. Together, her parents Reinaldo and Melitina managed the grocery store, coffee shop, large vegetable garden, vineyard, and livestock. Her father, Reinaldo, also worked independently as a barber.

In December 1962, Júlia married the love of her life — a kind, respectful, and gentle man from the neighboring town of Sobreiro, V.N. de Cerveira. In 1965, she bravely crossed the ocean alone on her first flight to join her husband in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where they began their new life together. In March 1966, they welcomed their first child, Helena, followed by their son, Mario João, in March 1971.

Júlia worked in the textile industry before focusing on her family. Her kindness, humor, and bright presence left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Mom, you faced many silent battles that were not always understood, but as it’s often said, the biggest hearts feel the deepest pain. During your final months in hospital, you showed extraordinary strength, courage, and determination — a true testament to your resilience and bravery.

Rest in peace, beautiful. You will forever be missed and deeply loved.

The family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of the Palliative Care Unit at St. Boniface Hospital for their exceptional care and kindness.

Prayers will be held on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel (1442 Main Street), with Msgr. Maurice Commeault officiating.

Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Monday, November 3, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Parish (181 Austin Street), celebrated by Rev. Fr.  André Lico. Entombment will take place at Queen of Heaven Mausoleum, Assumption Cemetery (3990 Portage Ave)

Those honoured to serve as pallbearers are Christopher Pereira, Bryan Matias, Nicholas Pereira, Lucas Rosa, Tony Filleti, and Darren Frederickson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba in Júlia’s memory.
