MARIA DA CONCEICAO GUERRA
(nee BORRALHO)
December 8, 1928 – August 27, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Maria da Conceicao Guerra (nee Borralho), on Wednesday, August 27th, 2025 at the age of 96 years with her loving family at her side. Maria was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend who liked to help others.
Maria was born December 8th, 1928, in Boleiros, Fatima, Portugal. She had immigrated with her family to Canada in 1964, first setting roots in Thompson, Manitoba. She returned to Portugal, and a few years later in 1974 Maria came back to Canada and settled in Winnipeg.
She worked at various places throughout her life, including the International Inn Hotel, and the old Eaton’s department store in downtown Winnipeg, where she made many friends. Maria was a dedicated and hard-working individual. A woman of great tenacity, strength and love for her family. That is her legacy.
Maria is predeceased by her eldest son Antonio.
She leaves to mourn her sons Victor (Teresa), Virgilio (Donna); daughter Georgina (Luis) and her cherished grandchildren, Christopher, Paul, Belinda, Antonio and Jeremie.
Maria loved spending time with her family and friends. She was devoted to her family and helped raise all her grandchildren.
Maria was a devoted Roman Catholic. She found strength in her faith throughout her life. In her hometown of Boleiros, Fatima, Portugal, she found devotion to Nossa Senhora do Livramento and Nossa Senhora de Fatima. Maria was very proud to say that she was born in Fatima. In Winnipeg, she expressed her faith and devotion to Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. Her family named her Maria da Conceicao since she was born on December 8, the celebration of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.
Maria was a kind and generous person who believed in helping those in need. She did this by donating to many charities and visiting sick individuals in care.
Often, she would say: “Time to go…meaning that she had lived her life…”
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to friends and family who have provided support during this difficult time. A special thank you to the staff at Residence Despins where she spent several years. As well as the staff at Actionmarguerite St. Joseph Nursing Home, for their compassion and care of our mother. We will forever be grateful for their dedication and care.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Immaculate Conception Parish, 181 Austin St. North, on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 at 12:30 p.m. Viewing will precede the mass, starting at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Maria to any charity of your choice.
She will forever be in our hearts and remembered for the legacy of love and strength that she leaves behind.
Descanse em paz/Rest in Peace
