WALTER GEORGE GRESKO

March 14, 1937 – August 13, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Walter Gresko, on Wednesday, August 13 at the age of 88.  

Wally was born and raised in Transcona where he lived his entire life.  He was employed with Kingsway as a transport driver.  He enjoyed talking on his CB radio while driving and went by the handle of “The Green Giant!”  In his younger years, Wally drove a motorcycle where he adopted the name “Spooge” and he affectionately became “Uncle Spooge” to his many nieces and nephews.  At one time, he drove a Volkswagen Beetle and that became known as a “Spoogie Wagon!” His gentle nature and free spirit made him a favourite.

Wally’s greatest joy was his family and he cared for them deeply. He cherished his cottage at Jessica Lake that he and Diana lovingly built from scratch. Wally enjoyed fishing and waterskiing. They spent countless hours blueberry picking and feeding the birds and chipmunks.  You could always count on Wally to have the wood stove stoked up.  You would never freeze in that cottage!

He was a member of the Thursday night supper club for 18 years, that he looked forward to every week.

Wally leaves to mourn his son Dave (Debbie); granddaughter Tara; daughter Colleen (Darin) and granddaughter Shannon (Ian), with whom he shared a special bond. He was predeceased by Diana, his wife of 57 years; his parents George and Lena, and his grandson Derek Kuz.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Transcona Memorial United Church, 209 Yale Avenue West, on Friday, August 29th at 2:00pm.
