OLGA MILDRED HUMENY Obituary
OLGA MILDRED HUMENY (DEDA)
June 16, 1936 - May 24, 2025
It is with great sorrow our family announces the passing of Olga Humeny, aged 88 years at Park Manor personal care home, with her loving family by her side.
Olga was predeceased by her parents Anthony and Ahafia; her sister Antonia; her husband Bill and many other family members and friends.
Left to cherish Olga's memory is her daughter Linda(Jim); son Larry(Stacey); nieces Marlene(Rick), Cindy(Randy); grandchildren Rhianne(Evan), Kerstin, Payton and Calleigh; as well as many other family members and friends.
Olga was born to Ukrainian immigrants in 1936 in the north end of Winnipeg. It was a hard life growing up in the great depression and in the shadow of World War 2. However, Olga and her family persevered despite the hardships they incurred.
Olga attended Tec Voc School, where she made many friends and excelled in her studies. One friend Olga met and remained friends with throughout her life was Sylvia. Olga and Sylvia would experience all the highs and lows that life would throw their way and would remain friends through it all.
A few years after graduation Olga would meet a fellow Ukrainian north ender by the name of Bill. They would date for a number of years before finally getting married in 1959. After marriage, Bill and Olga would move to the ever growing city of Transcona to build a new home and start a family. However the newly wed couple first decided to see the world and travel before starting their family.
They had lots of fun and adventures throughout their travels. Eventually they decided it was time to start their family. First to come along was Linda and a few years later to follow was Larry. Olga loved being a wife, mother and a homemaker. She excelled in all three and made a loving and caring home for her family.
In 1980 Bill would be diagnosed with lymphoma and would have to retire from work due to his illness.
Olga was constantly taking Bill to doctors appointments and hospital visits along with working, taking care of the home and the children. Through it all she did it with grace, dignity and love for her family. Unfortunately Bill would pass away in 1983 due to the cancer. Olga, not even fifty years old, was left a widower and left to raise two teenagers on her own. Olga worked at times two jobs to ensure her children were taken care off. She worked at Canadian Tire and Woolco mainly at this time. Olga would eventually leave Canadian Tire and soley work at Woolco, which eventually became Walmart. Olga worked at Walmart til her retirement in 2006.
In retirement Olga kept herself busy with many hobbies and of course her family. Olga loved to play bingo, cards, watching the Bombers, going out for dinner, going to the casino, and of course gardening. Olga loved growing plants, flowers and vegetables, especially tomatoes. She aways had tomato plants ready for family and friends to plant once spring came. Olga was a member of the Transcona Gardening club for many years. Olga had a love for all animals since childhood, owning several dogs and cats throughout her lifetime. This included cats Smokey, Chyna, and Macy. Olga loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She always loved when they came over to visit her and spoiled them rotten every time she could. They never left her house hungry or thirsty or without tons of hugs. Olga loved hearing about their accomplishments and all the things going on in their lives. She was so proud of her family and loved them with all her heart.
Olga lived in her home until August 2024. At this time she experienced several falls at home which resulted in her hospitalization. Olga spent several months at Concordia hospital healing. At this time it was decided that it was in Olga's best interest to enter a personal care home. She first went to Beacon Hill Lodge in the downtown area. It was quite an adjustment for her at first but it didn't take long for her to settle in. Olga spent several months at Beacon Hill Lodge before moving to Park Manor in Transcona. Olga remained at Park Manor until her passing.
We would like to thank all the staff at Concordia hospital, Beacon Hill Lodge, and Park Manor for all their help, caring and compassion with looking after our mother.
"Go rest high on that mountain Mom.
Your work on earth is done. Go to heaven a shoutin'.
For the love of thine father and his son".
A graveside service will be held Thursday July 10th at 10:30 a.m. at Glen Eden Cemetery, 4477 Main Street, West St. Paul.
A celebration of Olga’s life will be held Thursday July 10th from 1 - 3 p.m. at Ukrainian Orthodox Church of All Saints, 1500 Day Street, Transcona.
In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Olga's name to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
