Obituary of JOAO "JOHN" MEDEIROS
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Joao "John" Luis Medeiros in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on May 11, 2025.
Born on July 27, 1953, in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, John was predeceased by his parents, Rosa Raposo and Luis Cabecinha, his beloved wife, Sharon Anderson, and his father-in-law, Fred Anderson.
He is survived by his loving sister, Rosarinha Torres (Duarte), his mother-in-law, Helen Anderson, and his children: Rosa Buschau (Aaron), Laura Medeiros (Rob), Mark Medeiros (Laura), and John "Johnny" Medeiros (Danielle), as well as his step-daughter, Lisa Campbell (Jeff). John was a cherished Vavo (grandfather) to Chloe, Owen, and Eckko, with whom he shared a close and loving bond. He is also survived by his other grandchildren: Kayla, Meryk, Emma, Brandon, Crosse, Kylie, and Memphis.
John retired from the City of Winnipeg in 2017 after a long and committed career in construction, primarily specializing in concrete work. Even beyond his regular employment, John was known for his strong work ethic and was always willing to lend his skills to friends and family, often undertaking concrete projects for them on the side. In his leisure time, John enjoyed the camaraderie of the local Portuguese Sports Bars in Winnipeg, where he would play dominos and socialize with friends over drinks.
Having grown up working on his family's farm in Portugal, John had a deep-rooted connection to the land, which later manifested in his passion for gardening. He found immense satisfaction in nurturing plants and tending to his garden. With a culinary foundation likely built at home, John further utilized his skills while serving as a Chef in the Portuguese Military. He had a particular fondness for traditional Portuguese cuisine and rarely ate out, preferring to prepare authentic Portuguese meals at home, as these flavors were not readily available in restaurants.
For most of his adult life, John faced challenges in his relationships with his family. However, in his later years, he embarked on a journey of positive change. During this time, he dedicated himself to repairing and strengthening family bonds, finding particular joy in spending time with his grandchildren, especially Chloe, Owen, and Eckko.
The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to all the dedicated and compassionate staff at The Health Sciences Centre in GH5. Your kindness and care made John's multiple stays comfortable, especially during times when his family couldn't be there. Your support during his final days was invaluable, providing comfort not only to John but also to his family. Thank you so much for your compassion and dedication.
In accordance with John's wishes, there will be a private service held for immediate family members. A small reception will take place on May 14th at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street.
