Obituary of DOROTHY TOMLINSON
Dorothy Ethel Tomlinson, born February 6, 1934, to parents Robert and Ethel Tomlinson of the Cameron District near Minnedosa, MB, passed away on April 8, 2025.
Born at home, Dorothy was the youngest of 6 siblings. Predeceased by brothers; Norman (Annette), and George (Ann); Sisters, Nellie, Betty (Bob), & Elsie.
Dorothy graduated from Cameron school and went on to be employed by Manitoba Telephone Systems until she retired. Dorothy often mentioned that being the youngest in a family of 5 siblings in the great depression, the older kids got the new stuff and she enjoyed a good supply of well-loved hand me downs.
When Dorothy finished school, she moved to Winnipeg with her older sister Elsie, and started her life long career with MTS. She worked as an operator from 1952 – 1959, when she moved to service observer for 11 years. In 1970, she moved into the position of training service observers (analysts). Dorothy combined this position with Service Assistant Provincial Observer in the absence of Position Holder. During this time, she covered positions in The Pas, Dauphin, Portage La Prairie, Selkirk, and Brandon. From 1971-1976 she became an investigator of accounts and in 1976 – 1979, investigator of Major Accounts. In 1979, she worked as Senior Clerk in charge of training investigators.
She participated in curling and bowling, and for many years, she and Elsie always had season tickets to the Jets and Blue Bombers. She kept up on the latest news and weather around the world, and anything affecting her family. She loved watching sporting events on TV, and that was often the topic of discussion with family and friends.
She was very handy with computers and cameras and always kept up to date, sharing pictures and messages with family and friends. Upon retirement, Dorothy and Elsie enjoyed splitting their time between Minnedosa and Winnipeg. They loved summers in Minnedosa, caring for gardens and participating in horticultural events. Winters they enjoyed walking in Polo Park and visiting with friends. They enjoyed travelling, taking trips to Jamaica, Palm Springs, Victoria BC, and more. They made several trips to visit their sister Betty, and family in Augusta, Georgia and remained in close contact with them through calls and letters to gap the distance.
They moved from Hillsboro House to Fort Garry Place for the remainder of their lives. Dorothy enjoyed living at 20 Fort St where she had many friends. She enjoyed participating in the HighRisers Dinner and the Entertainment, as well as the Worship Services when held. Dorothy’s favorite activity of these past years was gathering with friends for lunch every day at the 2 Broke Girls Diner in the Mall. She will be missed.
