ALBERT SARNA

Obituary of ALBERT EDWARD SARNA

ALBERT (AL) EDWARD SARNA
April 21, 1937 – April 28, 2025

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Albert (Al) Edward Sarna on Monday, April 28, 2025, at the age of 88. Al passed peacefully at home surrounded by love and family by his side and is now reunited with his beloved wife Claire (predeceased in 2017) and cherished son Timothy (predeceased in 1981).

Born in Elfros, Saskatchewan, Al was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, devoted son and brother to eight siblings; friend to many and a man of unwavering faith. He leaves behind his daughter Michele; sons Jeffrey (Jennifer) and Jason (Devin) and grandchildren Alexandra and Cameron who brought him immense pride and joy.

Al is also survived by his brothers Ed Sarna and Pat (Val) Sarna; sisters Liz (Bernie) Dudeck and Louise (Bill) Pukalo; as well as many nieces and nephews, numerous godchildren, in-laws, and dear friends.

Al met the love of his life, Claire, on the steps of Holy Ghost Church. Their love blossomed into a five-year courtship and a beautiful marriage that spanned 55 years. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, family, and enduring love.

Al was a prominent member of the West Kildonan community. He worked at Luke’s Machinery before spending many years as Print Shop Manager at Health Sciences Centre (HSC) until his retirement.

He was an active member of St. Anthony of Padua Church, where he participated in the Saturday night choir, the Knights of Columbus, and marriage preparation classes.

One of his greatest joys in life was camping—sitting around a campfire playing guitar and singing songs accompanied by his wife Claire, and all who were willing to join in.

He was predeceased by his parents, Michael and Annie Sarna; his sisters, Rose Watson, Mary Bruck, and Stella Pidek; and his brother, Joe Sarna. A man of great courage and devotion, Al lived his life with deep spiritual conviction and commitment to the Lord.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 8, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, 250 Burrin Avenue, Winnipeg, with Rev. Fr. Dominic Yuen presiding. For those who wish, a viewing will be held prior to Mass. Prayers will take place on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg. Interment will be announced at a later date.

Al’s memory will live on in all who were blessed to know him.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the wonderful team of caregivers who brought comfort, compassion, wisdom, and friendship to Dad and our family throughout his illness. While there are too many people to name individually, thank you to the medical team at CancerCare Manitoba—the doctors, nurses, radiation technicians, counselors, and clerks. Most especially, we are grateful to the nurses, doctors, health care aides, and case coordinators with the Palliative Care Program, who were truly sent by God to guide us through this difficult journey. Because of you, our Dad was able to pass away in his home as he wished.
