Obituary of ROBERT "BOB" DONALD MILES
It is with heavy hearts we announce the accidental passing of Robert (Bob) Miles on April 14, 2025, at the age of 71.
Bob is predeceased by his parents Don and Pat Miles, brother Glen Miles, and nephew Jeremy Miles.
He leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 49 years Susan, his sister Kristen Miles, his children Trisha Moder (Jason), Michael (Dana), and Troy (Frank), and his cherished grandchildren Kennedy, Jade, and Austin. He had numerous sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews, uncles and aunts.
Bob grew up in West Kildonan with his sister and brother. His family bought their forever cabin at Red Rock Lake when he was 9 years old. This is where he had his first job delivering papers by boat around the lake, accompanied by his trusty and loyal pet crow Punky. While spending summers and weekends at the lake, his love of fishing with a particular passion for ice fishing grew.
His and Susan’s retirement took them to Red Rock Lake where they spent the majority of their time enjoying being one with nature, family, and friends. He would stay out on the lake all day with one of his closest friends, appearing as though they were going around in circles. He spent countless hours with his kids and ultimately with his grandkids on the lake fishing, water skiing, swimming, tubing, quadding during the summer, and then tobogganing, sledding, and ice fishing during the winter. When he wasn’t on the lake, he spent much of his time in his man cave tinkering around.
His greatest joy was being surrounded by his family and friends. Whether it be a walk around the lake with the grandkids or family dinners, he loved his family but also held a special place in his heart for his many friends and neighbors. He would spend hours talking with anyone and everyone. He would end his week with a few card games with friends, which he always seemed to lose, but never seemed to mind. He looked forward to his weekly breakfasts with some of his closest friends, who knew him as Bubba or Bobby, and will surely be missed.
Bob joined the Winnipeg Fire Department on November 16, 1987, and retired as a Captain on April 30, 2017. He took immense pride and joy in his difficult but highly respected job. He would come home and share stories about calls he went on and of course, telling jokes, and the pranks the crew pulled on each other at the hall. He made lifetime bonds and friendships with his crew members that only another brother or sister in the Fire Department can understand and wouldn’t have traded that for anything in the world.
Bob lived a full life of hard work and generosity, showing kindness to anyone who would stop and chat with him. He gave freely of his time to anyone who needed help. He will be sorely missed. Do not shed tears of sadness, be honored you had the pleasure of him being a part of your life.
The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to the RCMP from the Lac du Bonnet detachment, and the Paramedics from Falcon Lake, and Sobering Funeral home for their kindness and support they extended to our family and the dignity and compassion they provided to Bob in his final hours. A special thank you to the Honor Guard from Platoon 4 for their participation in his life celebration, he would be truly honored.
A celebration of life will be held April 24, 2025, at Cropo Funeral Chapel 1442 Main Street, at 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers donations to the Winnipeg Firefighters Burn Fund or charity of your choice would be appreciated.
