Obituary of LUBA NELLIE DREWNIAK

LUBA NELLIE DREWNIAK

Luba passed away peacefully with family by her side on Monday March 31, 2025 at Seven Oaks Hospital at the age of 81.  Her loving husband William was able to hold her hand until her last breath.

Luba was predeceased by her parents Peter and Anna Stadnyk; brothers William and Sylvester Stadnyk and sister Katherine Stadnyk.

Luba is lovingly remembered by her husband William of 63 years; children Cynthia and Kathleen (James); grandchildren Darian and Emma; step-grandchildren Haley and Aleka.  Luba also leaves her brothers Nick, Nestor (Kathy), Paul (Libby) and Jim (Sandra); sisters Elsie and Mary (Danny), as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Luba was born in Vita, Manitoba on January 5, 1944.  As a teenager she met dad when he came to her farm with his uncle to purchase a horse.  He saw a beautiful young lady walking around and was smitten from that day on.  Mom and dad married on September  23rd, 1961 in Vita.  They had their first daughter Cynthia 2 years later.  Kathleen came along 10 years later in October 1973.

Luba left the farm in her later teens to move to the city and work.  She worked at many jobs such as working in the kitchen at the Grill Room in Eaton’s and cleaning surgery rooms at the HSC.  Shortly after, she developed a passion for hairdressing and attended Pollock’s Beauty School.  Once she was certified she worked at Skuba’s Hair Salon for many years.  In later years she worked from home as a hairdresser.  Her weekly clients became family.  Mom not only did their hair every Saturday, but as the ladies aged mom helped care for them. Eventually mom went back to her roots and worked evenings at Pollock Beauty School as an instructor.

Luba loved working in the kitchen at the church.  She was always there to help with all luncheons, bazars, funerals, perogy and kolache making days.  She also was a part of the Sisterhood at the church.  The church was a very important part of her life.

As a child, I remember mom having a passion for cake decorating.  I will forever remember my special teddy bear cake she made for my birthday.  She became very talented baking and decorating wedding and anniversary cakes.

Mom could spend hours and hours outside in her garden.  She loved her flowers so much.  She was especially proud of her rose bushes and would send us pictures of them daily when they were in bloom.  She really struggled last year when she couldn’t be outside all day in her garden.

Mom’s greatest accomplishments in her life and her pride and joy were her grandchildren Darian and Emma.  She was so proud of them and the happiest when they were around.  My children couldn’t have asked for a better Baba.  There isn’t anything she wouldn’t have done for them. Mom was there every day for my children, for whatever they needed.  Even the past few months as she became more ill, she would still phone them and tell them, “if you need anything call me”.  As mom was struggling in the hospital, she was more concerned that they were getting enough rest over the rest she needed. They were loved by her more than they will ever know.

The family would like to thank the staff at Amber Meadows for helping care for mom and supporting our family these past few months.  We would also like to thank the staff at Seven Oaks Hospital for taking care of mom in her final days.

Mom suffered from Sarcoidosis and Pulmonary Fibrosis.  In lieu of flowers please consider supporting the Manitoba Lung Association in honour of mom.

Thank you to Rev. Father Gene for the numerous visits to the hospital to pray for mom and comfort her as well as our family.  Also, thank you for just being a great friend to my parents over the years.  Our family truly appreciates you.

Thank you to all the family and friends who came to say goodbye to mom, who called, messaged and offered their support to our family through this difficult time.  Not just in the hospital but in the months leading up to this. Without your love we could not get through this. Thank you to everyone who has sent beautiful flowers.

Thank you to Don from Cropo’s for making this sad experience easier for us.  We appreciate your compassion and support.

Mom, we will forever hold you in our hearts.  We miss you so much already.  Please rest in peace and continue to be our angel.  Love you mom (Baba)!

Funeral Rite will be held on Saturday April 5, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, 1175 Main Street.  Rev. Fr. Gene Maximiuk will be officiating.  Interment will follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main Street.
