Obituary of STANLEY WALTER BURT
Stanley Walter Burt passed away peacefully Friday December 27, 2024 in Winnipeg at the age of 90.
Predeceased by his mother and father Leon Bursztynski and Xenia (Didur), his wife Theresa (Deegan), his second wife Sylvia (Windeatt) and his sister Stephanie Braschuk (Bursztynski) .
Stan is survived by his children Richard (Holly) Burt, Mark (Patricia) Windeatt, Denise (Larry) Colin, David (Darlene) Windeatt, Christopher (Kelly) Burt, Elizabeth (Stephen) Horne, Carol (Gord) Ennis and Margaret Lecompte.
Born February 8, 1934, Stan grew up in the North End of Winnipeg. At the age of 18, he won the Juniors Canadian National Championships then called the “Dominion of Canada Basketball Champion” in 1952 playing for the Winnipeg Light Infantry Team. Becoming two-time winners of the Dominion of Canada Basketball Championship in 1952 and 1953, he and his teammates were inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983 and 1984 and later inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 for their participation on the national winning basketball team the Winnipeg Light Infantry.
He started working for TCA (TransCanada Airline) at the age of 17 in 1951, which later became Air Canada, retiring after 40 years of service in 1991.
In the early 1950’s, he met and married his wife Theresa Denise Burt (Deegan). They had five children ; Richard, Denise, Christopher, Elizabeth and Margaret. He moved his family from the North End to Transcona in 1963. He enjoyed sketching and painting, winning first place across Canada in Air Canada’s Art Contest held in Montreal in 1966. Two of his pictures were on display in the New York Kennedy Airport. Later he also had a picture hanging in the lobby of a hotel in Norway.
In the early 1970’s he met and married his wife Sylvia Ann Windeatt (Wright). They renovated the Transcona bungalow house and raised their blended family of 8 children; Rick, Mark, Denise, David, Chris, Beth, Carol and Maggie. Often being compared to The Brady Bunch and Eight is Enough with their new family of 4 boys and 4 girls.
Stan took up photography often being asked to photograph weddings. His main interests remained watching wildlife, and photography. He was always an avid sports fan and loved following the Winnipeg Jets, Blue Bombers and the Goldeyes. He could often be seen watching one game while listening to another with his earplugs and a radio.
He remained active in his faith and church at Blessed Sacrament Parish, singing in the choir and taking part in the Pastoral Care Team. He and Sylvia performed at many volunteer functions with the Pastoral Care Team.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Kevin Grace and the staff of Park Manor for their care & support over the years, as well as the Pastoral Care that was provided to him by the team at Blessed Sacrament Parish.
Stan has left a wonderful legacy of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren who he truly loved. He will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart & Stroke Foundation, Alzheimer’s Society or any brain research projects at any Canadian University.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at Cropo Funeral Chapel 1800 Day Street, Transcona, on Tuesday April 22, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. with a light lunch to follow. Interment at 3:00 pm at Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Ave.
