Obituary of ROBERT ADAM SCHLEDWITZ
Rob passed away peacefully at the St. Boniface Hospital early on Saturday February 8th, 2025 after a courageous battle with Lung Cancer over the past 4+ years. Rob passed away while holding his wife Gail's hand, who stayed with him the entire time he was in the hospital.
Rob is survived by his wife Gail of 63 years, their sons, Dale, Ron (Janet), Darryl (Vicki) and Randy (Lisa), his grandchildren Jordan, Alyssa, Kiara, PJ (Ashley), Stephen, Kodie, Jeffrey, and great grandchildren Mia, Leighton and Hunter, Aubrey and Paisley. His siblings Don (Shirley), Brian (Jane) and Ruth (Gil) with many nephews, nieces and many cousins in Manitoba, Ontario and parts of the United States.
He was predeceased by both of his parents Adam and Tillie Schledewitz, his in laws Minnie and Tom lball, along with his grandparents and other family members.
Rob was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the Concordia Hospital, he was the second child of Adam and Tillie Schledewitz. Rob and his parents along with his siblings grew up in Elmwood, where he met most of his lifelong friends. Rob made deliveries for The Talbot Drug store back in 1957 and he also met the love of his life Gail Virginia Elizabeth lball, who also was working there. This is where their love story began. During his life Rob worked very hard to build a life for Gail and their growing family of 4 boys. His first job was at Winnipeg Wholesales, he then went on to work at Maple Leaf Flower Mill where he worked with his father Adam. When the Mill was shutting down, he then went to Northern Messenger for a short time and then it was during this time that Rob and Gail discussed creating their own company Kustom Kartage Ltd. Rob was an Owner/Operator for 40+ years and enjoyed being his own boss. When he was done being his own boss in 1999, he became the dispatcher at Griffin Logistics which then turned into Ram Messenger, which then slowly turned into him retiring. Rob retired back in 2006 from Ram Messenger where he could begin to stay home more and annoy Mother.
Many weekends and summers were spent out at the trailer in St. Laurent, MB where all of the boys and the grandkids were welcome at any time to come for a visit or to stay the weekend. Rob and Gail had many friends that they enjoyed spending time with at the lake and at home.
After retirement Rob and Gail then began to travel to many different places both in Canada and the United States. Some amazing stories came from those trips, like when they went to South Dakota to visit Mount Rushmore and take the train for 40 minutes to see Deadwood, just to drive back to the same place in 10 minutes in the truck. They also went to Niagara Falls on their honeymoon, which they revisited multiple times afterwards, because Rob wanted to see if the falls would be going in the opposite direction just one time. One of Gail's favorite trips was when they went to Montana together because of how beautiful it is and they could see for miles in any direction. Rob always enjoyed their trips to Kitchener, ON to visit the family that they have there. Rob had always told Gail that if they didn't have their children and parents here in Winnipeg, he would have moved them all to Kitchener/Waterloo because it was his favorite place.
Gail and the family would like to send our gratitude and appreciation to Dr. D. Khangura, Dr. Craig Harlos and all of the staff and volunteers at Cancer Care Manitoba. We would also like to thank all of the staff at the St. Boniface General Hospital for the amazing compassionate care that they provided both Rob and our family during our time there.
Rob and Gail had a strong and loving marriage of 63 years and raised 4 strong boys who they watched become men. Mom and Dad had the kind of marriage and life that we all hope to aspire to in our own lives.
As per Rob's wishes cremation has already taken place with interment to follow at a later time. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 8th, 2025 at Holy Cross E.V. Lutheran Church located at 708 McCalman Avenue, Winnipeg, MB.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Cancer Care Manitoba in his honor.
