Obituary of MERCY ATIENO OMONDI

It is with profound sadness that the family of Mercy Atieno Omondi announces her untimely passing on Friday, January 17, 2025, at the age of 30. Mercy tragically lost her life in a devastating multi-vehicle accident during a severe snowstorm in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The blizzard, which reduced visibility to near zero, caused a multi-vehicle pileup accident near the intersection of Fermor Avenue and Symington Road, cutting short her bright and promising life.

Mercy is survived by her loving mother, Rose Omondi; father Gordon Omondi Teti, sister Lornah Omondi; and brother Gordon Junior Omondi. She also leaves behind her cherished grandmother Mama Loise Adhiambo “Mathe” and a large extended family of uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who became like family to her.

Born on June 10, 1994, in Kenya, Mercy spent much of her childhood in the coastal city of Mombasa. She began her education in Kenya before her family relocated to Canada, where she completed junior high school and graduated from Miles Macdonell Collegiate in 2012. In October 2023, she graduated as a Nursing Assistant from Robertson College and was eagerly working towards pursuing her lifelong dream of becoming a registered nurse.

Mercy’s vibrant personality and love for life were reflected in her passions. She delighted in exploring new culinary experiences, attending musical events, and spending cherished time with her grandmother, “Mathe”. Deeply connected to her Kenyan roots, Mercy always looked forward to her trips back home. Her generous spirit was evident in her charitable work; she often visited the MACODEP Children’s Home & Rescue Center- Got Osimbo in Kenya. During her last visit in December 2024, she brought gifts and hosted a special lunch for the children, leaving a legacy of kindness and compassion.

Mercy was a gifted and loving babysitter, adored by the children she cared for and their families. Her gentle spirit and kindness made her a beacon of joy to all who knew her.

A celebration of Mercy’s life will be held on Friday, January 31, 2025, at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Viewing will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. The burial procession to follow in Glen Lawn Cemetery, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd, Winnipeg, Manitoba, where Mercy will be laid to rest.

Mercy’s warm heart, gentle soul, and unwavering kindness will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. May she rest in eternal peace. Mercy, we loved you, but Jesus loved you more.
