Obituary of ROGER CHARLES GARROD

ROGER CHARLES GARROD

After a brief illness Roger Garrod passed away at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Wednesday, October 18, 2017. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Patricia Garrod, and nephew Adam Garrod. He leaves behind his wife Helen, brother Howard (Nancy), nephew Michael (Sharon), Helen's sister Margie, and many other caring relatives on Helen's side.

Roger was born in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, England in 1950, and immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1954. His family lived in a number of different cities until he finished high school. He arrived in Winnipeg at the age of 16 to attend the University of Manitoba to study architecture. He met Helen on campus in 1971, and they were married in 1973. Roger enjoyed different careers, working for an architectural firm in Ottawa, then pursuing graphic arts. Eventually he returned to the University of Manitoba, achieving a Master of Science degree in 1984, specializing in Botany. Around the same time period he built the house that he and Helen have resided in for over 30 years. Upon graduation he worked for Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and eventually moved to Public Works and Government Services Canada in Environmental Services. Although Roger had many interests in life, an enduring passion has been his involvement in the lives of young people. He was committed to coaching and training youth through both scouting and archery. Upon retirement in 2008, Roger pursued his interests to the fullest, including skiing, biking, canoeing, curling, kendo, kyudo, travelling and spending precious time with friends and family. He continued to play an important role in the archery community at the local and national level as a competitor, coach, mentor, judge and organizer. He judged locally, nationally and internationally, including Italy, China, Poland, USA, Mexico and Central America. Roger loved to travel with his wife Helen. They explored Canada from coast to coast and the north and made many international trips. Those trips always included exciting outdoor activities which were so much a part of who Roger was.

We would like to sincerely express our appreciation for the care Roger received at both the Health Sciences Centre and Riverview Health Centre. We are especially grateful to Doctor Sochocki, Doctor Garcia and the specialists and caregivers who were so generous with their time and expertise.

If friends so desire donations may be made in Roger's name to either Canadian Diabetes Association or the Canadian Cancer Society.

A celebration of Roger's life will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 12 in the Qualico Family Centre by the duck pond in Assiniboine Park.
