Obituary of SYLVIA KOSTIUK

SYLVIA KOSTIUK 

(nee Karpiak)

September 8, 1932 – October 1, 2017

Surrounded by her loving family our beloved mother and grandmother passed away peacefully on October 1, 2017 at the Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg.  

Mom was born on September 8, 1932 in Garland, Manitoba to Mary (Mazur) and Anton Karpiak.  She was the seventh born of eight children, and attended Haig and Ethelbert schools.  Mom had aspirations in high school to become a teacher.  She attended Teachers College in Winnipeg and taught in country schools in the Garland and Pine River areas.  While teaching, Mom met Dad (Walter) and on October 21, 1954 they were married.  They made their home in Pine River where they raised their three children. 

Mom was active in the community of Pine River and strongly involved in the Sts. Vladamir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Church, the Community Centre, the 4-H Club, Ukrainian Cultural Association, the Senior’s Club and served as a Duck Mountain School Division Trustee.  As busy as she was, her first priority was always her family and she made sure that everyone was well looked after.   

Mom and Dad retired to Dauphin in 2005.  Following Dad’s passing in August 2016, Mom resided at Lorray Manor in Dauphin and in May 2017 moved to Concordia Village in Winnipeg. Although, her time in Winnipeg was short, she was able to spend time with two of the most important men in her life, grandsons Tyler and Matt.  Her boys meant the world to her and they appreciated her broad knowledge of current events, politics and her skill in solving crossword puzzles.  She was a loving, caring, nurturing mother and grandmother.  She instilled in her children and grandchildren the importance of family and continually reminded us that no matter where we settled, to remain best friends and always be there for each other.  This request is easy to fill.  She raised good friends!

Mom will be lovingly remembered and missed by children Valerie Adams, son Terry and daughter-in-law Patti, Marianne and son-in-law Terry Enns, grandchildren Tyler, Matthew, Desiree and husband Dave, sisters-in-law Olha Kostiuk and Kathryn Pfeiffer as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  

Mom was predeceased by our dad, her parents, her brother Michael, sisters Olga Maryniuk, Victoria Bewski, Anne Walker, Stella Magus, Nellie Shawaga, and Edith Koverzin.  

Mom, when thoughts of you are in our hearts, we are never far from home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mom’s memory to The Arthritis Society of Manitoba.

A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday October 11, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sneath Strilchuk Family Care Centre, 500 Riverside Road, Dauphin, Manitoba.  Cremation has taken place and a private interment will follow.
