MADELEINE BERNIER

MADELEINE BERNIER

Peacefully, on Thursday, May 11, 2017, Madeleine Bernier passed away in her room at Actionmarguerite in St. Boniface. Madeleine, otherwise known as Tante Madeleine, will be missed by her brother-in-law Paul Adams; niece Marie Adams; and nephews, Paul, Mark, Christopher, David and Michael Adams. She was predeceased by her father, Marc Alexandre Bernier and mother Emma Louise Bernier (Flanagan); siblings, Louise Adams (Bernier) and Paul Bernier as well as her beloved cousin, Fr. Maurice Deniset-Bernier. Tante Madeleine was born in St. Boniface on February 6, 1920. She attended school at St. Joseph's Academy which was run by the Sister of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. As a young woman, and perhaps due to her love for algebra, she worked in the Federal Building on Main St. as an assessor for the Canadian Department of National Revenue (Taxation Canada) where she formed a number of meaningful life-long friendships. After leaving the federal civil service she worked as a journalist and assistant editor of the Women's Page for the Winnipeg Free Press and then for fifteen years as a journalist and music critic for the Winnipeg Tribune. She was deeply proud of her career in journalism and becoming the first woman to serve as a board member of the Winnipeg Press Club. Throughout her life Tante Madeleine was a devoted Catholic and ever-faithful servant of the Church. Her faith was accompanied with action, including volunteering at Agape Table, supporting the pro-life movement, serving as the local director for the natural family planning organization SERENA, and supporting parish activities at St. Mary's Cathedral and Holy Rosary Parish. In her later years, she very much enjoyed living at Polish Manor on Selkirk Avenue and sharing lunches with her new found Polish-Canadian friends. She was a woman who loved music, the arts, lively conversations, and the company of good people. The family extends its deep thanks to all the caring staff on 3DE of Actionmarguerite. A Mass to celebrate Tante Madeleine's life will be held Wednesday, May 17 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, 520 Osborne St. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Catholic Foundation which supports many good causes and charities in our province (www.catholicfoundation.mb.ca)
