STEPHEN BUCHKO

Obituary of STEPHEN BUCHKO

STEPHEN BUCHKO After living a full life of 91 years, Stephen Buchko peacefully passed away, surrounded by family members, on Saturday, July 16, 2016, at Health Science Centre, Winnipeg. Stephen was born in Winnipeg on July 27, 1925. He is survived by Margaret, who after 65 years of marriage sadly said her good-byes. Stephen and Margaret were high-school sweethearts who remained beloved and the best of friends. Stephen is also survived by his sister Mary Deegan, son Alex and Heather Buchko and grand-daughters Kristyn and Kaitlan, daughter Barbara and Werner Burokas and grand-sons Matthew, Michael and Christopher, daughter Donna and Brian Malenki, grandson Bill and granddaughter Gina, sister-in-law Zita Buchko, many nieces, nephews, and longtime friends. Stephen was predeceased by his parents Mathew and Anna Buchko, and his twin brother Bill Buchko. Stephen was a skilled woodworker. He retired in 1989 after working for 40 years as a well-respected master-patternmaker in the tool and dye industry. Stephen served many years as secretary/treasurer of the Manitoba branch of the American Foundrymen’s Association. Stephen was an avid sportsman. He played for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Football Team, and until recently was actively involved in The Bomber Alumni Association. Steve bowled regularly in his youth, and enjoyed many years as a member of the Elmhurst Golf Club. Steve valued the companionship he found with the Blessed Virgin Mary Church seniors group, and particularly enjoyed contributing to the production of pyrohy. He appreciated the many friends he made over cards and coffee. In retirement Stephen and Margaret travelled extensively in Europe, the Caribbean, Hawaii, and across the U.S. and Canada. They enjoyed several cruises and returned with many wonderful tales to share. For Dad, family always came first. He had a huge heart; his love and encouragement were endless. Dad was always eager to lend a hand to family, friends, and neighbours, and to give much appreciated advice. He had a wonderful sense of humour, and shared many amusing memorable stories. Dad’s grandchildren were the lights of his life. He was so interested in and proud of their every accomplishment. Upon retirement Dad and Mom bought a cottage at Wanasing, V.B., which for many summers was the hub of activity for his family. How Dad loved riding his mower and grooming his yard so that it looked like a park when family arrived. Dad had a large presence and influence in our lives. He will be missed. The family would like to thank Dr. Horton, Dr. Leylek, Dr. MacMillan and staff at HSC for their kindness and compassion. Special thanks to the WRHA Home Care Program, particularly to Mila and Doris. According to Stephen’s wishes, a private service has taken place. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Cancer Care, Heart and Stroke Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
